June/July 2024

Summer has offically arrived in full bloom, which has got me ruminating on my favourite topic – wedding flowers. I must confess, I adore fresh flowers, none more so than our British spring and summer varieties, so I do hope you’ll indulge me for a short while as I wax lyrical!

The perfect wedding blooms effortlessly fill an empty venue with romance, fragrance and colour, creating the ultimate ambience; and with the right florist on your side, they can speak volumes about the two of you and the vision for your big day. What’s more, they’re efficient! Pedestals, aisle meadow arrangements, ceremony arches and much more can all be moved into your reception space after the “I dos” and seamlessly transform into centrepieces and top table backdrop. You get the most from your budget, your theme carries through and you keep waste to a minimum.

Your wedding day is all about the two of you, so why not have a think about how you can tailor your flowers to further tell your love story? The language of flowers combines tradition with sentimentality and conveys a meaning that maybe only the two of you will understand, but as you’re the two most important that’s all that matters. For example, gypsophila is a wedding staple but perhaps its meaning, everlasting love, has been lost over the years. Some of my other favourites are: cornflowers symbolising prosperity and friendship; hydrangeas meaning gratitude and understanding; peonies speaking of romance, prosperity, good luck and a happy life; and roses, in particular pink, which symbolise admiration. So, you see, you can write an entire love letter to your new spouse through your bouquet – how romantic.

I do hope some of this has whet your appetite for more wedspiration; if so, don’t miss our al fresco weddings feature, where flowers have a part to play. Plus, this issue’s Hot Topic experts are discussing intimate weddings.

So, as ever, enjoy and keeeep planning!

Bailiffscourt Hotel & Spa

Sumptuous, timeless and inspiring, Bailiffscourt offers a romantic setting with an elegant ambience. Narrow passageways with flagstone floors lead you through intimate lounges and sitting rooms, and Gothic mullioned windows frame picture-perfect views of the gardens and rose clad courtyard. Mere steps away from the Hotel is the luxurious and contemporary spa with facilities that include an indoor pool, outdoor heated infinity pool, hot tub, fitness suite, relaxation lounge and six treatment rooms. What’s more, there are 39 bedrooms and suites, some with open fireplaces and four-poster beds scattered throughout the house.

The gardens even boast an original and very pretty 13th-century Norman chapel, as well as a helipad for an indulgent arrival or departure.

With all the appearance of a Medieval house, Bailiffscourt’s best-kept secret is that until 1927 it didn’t exist! Designed for Lord Moyne, then Walter Guinness of the brewing family using original stone, woodwork, windows and fireplaces. Walking in, it’s like stepping back in time.

The Music Room is a characterful room hung with tapestries and has a fireplace ideal for a roaring log fire during a winter wedding. It can accommodate 40 guests seated or 65 standing for the ceremony, and 40 guests for a seated wedding breakfast.

The Chapel is available for romantic blessings for up to 40 seated or 60 standing. Filled with candles and flowers, it’s the perfect setting.

The Tapestry Restaurant is an elegant space complete with Medieval style architecture, mullioned windows and tapestry-hung walls. It can seat up to 80 loved ones.
