Abadia Retuerta is a captivatingly beautiful 12th-century converted abbey in the Duero Valley in Spain. Located less than a two-hour drive from Madrid, this restored abbey is majestically set on 500 acres of vineyards in the heart of the valley, in the province of Valladolid in central Spain. For guests without a car, there is a direct train from Madrid to the city of Valladolid, lasting just over an hour, and the hotel can arrange transfers for the 25-minute drive.

The Abadía Retuerta estate covers 1,730 acres with 500 acres of vineyards and is flanked by some of Spain’s most prestigious wineries. Charming towns and villages of historic and gastronomic interest are within a half-hour drive or so, and the surrounding countryside and Duero River are wonderful to explore on foot or bike.

The hotel occupies an abbey founded in 1146 by the Premonstratensian Order from France and is one of the most important Romanesque structures in the region. There were once 600 French Premonstratensian Order monasteries in Europe, but Abadia Retuerta is one of only two that have survived. It was restored and converted into a hotel by the Swiss-Italian architect Marco Serra and opened in 2012. The building's original use has been respected as far as possible, with the monks’ cells now transformed into smart, spacious rooms that are filled with exquisite pieces of art.

There are 27 rooms and three suites, all boasting beautiful views over the sprawling vineyard, which have been carefully renovated in a chic, contemporary style.

For locally inspired cuisine, guests can dine at Refectorio, overseen by talented executive chef Marc Segarra, whose impeccable cooking and sustainable ethos have earned the restaurant both a Michelin and a Michelin Green Star. Guests have three other stylish eateries to choose from, which are headed up by chef Ramón García.

Santuario Wellness & Spa is located in the old underground stable area and has a number of entrances to create an abundance of natural light. Spa seekers will be delighted by the impressive facilities, including a spa suite for ultimate privacy (complete with sauna, steam room, Jacuzzi, and relaxation area), indoor and outdoor pool, spa relaxation room, and a holistic spa menu filled with treatments by Natura Bisé and La Prairie Experience.
